Downtown Albemarle to Feature Historic Marker Program

ALBEMARLE, NC – In recognition of the City of Albemarle’s rich history, an historic marker program will soon highlight notable locations throughout the downtown area.

The City of Albemarle’s Planning and Development Department led a collaboration with the Stanly County Historical Society to begin the historic marker program. In the first phase of the program, markers will be placed at a total of ten locations:

1.

Alameda Theatre - 147 North Second Street

2.

Courthouse Park- Corner of Main Street & Second Street

(Site of former first jail and second courthouse)

3.

Stanly County Public Library (Site of former two former jails) - 133 East Main Street

4.

Stanly County Courthouse (Former site of Freeman Hotel, Stagecoach Stop, Central Hotel, Bivens Cabinet Shop) - 201 South Second Street

5.

Starnes- Parker Building / Opera House - 127 West Main Street

6.

Maralise Hotel (Demolished) - 213 West Main Street

(Currently parking lot next to Badin Brew at 124 South First Street)

8.

Ogden and Elizabeth King House - 200 South Second Street

9.

Isaiah & Ellen Snuggs House -112 North Third Street

10.

The historic markers will provide a brief narrative for each of the locations. Historian Lewis Bramlett worked to verify the accuracy of the facts that will appear on each marker. The markers will also include a QR code that can be scanned with a smartphone to take visitors to a web-based story map offering more information about the location and other historic sites visitors can experience.

The City of Albemarle’s Public Works division will complete installation of the historic markers in the coming months. The City of Planning and Development Department plans to eventually add another phase of historic markers.
