The City of Albemarle is served by Mayor Ronnie Michael and seven council members. Council meetings are held the first and third Mondays of each month at 6:30pm in the Albemarle City Hall Council Chambers at 144 North 2nd Street Albemarle, North Carolina.
Martha Sue Hall was first elected to the Albemarle City Council in November 2003. She served on the Stanly County Board of Commissioners from 1994-2000 having been elected as the first female to that board. While on the Board of Commissioners and during her tenure on the Albemarle City Council she has been the government's representative to the Centralina Regional Council of Government. She has served on the Executive Board for Centralina for over 20 years, having served as Vice President, President, and Immediate Past President. Council member Hall currently is serving as Mayor Pro Tem, having been elected by her peers on Council to serve in this role. She has been Mayor Pro Tem since 2015.
Mayor Pro Tem Hall was appointed in 2006 by the Speaker of the House (and reappointed every two years since that date) to serve on the State Child Fatality Task Force. She is in the seat that represents the North Carolina League of Municipalities. Since 2012, she has co-chaired the Unintentional Death Prevention Sub Committee (one of three committees) for the Task Force.
Mayor Pro Tem Hall has served on the NCLM Board of Directors and the Risk Manager Services Board. She is currently serving on the NCLM Board and is on the Executive Board.
Martha Sue is retired from the State of North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts having worked in Public Service for over thirty years. She retired in May 2014. During her career, she was involved in the development of many different programs throughout five different counties. She was instrumental in the Community Service Work Program; Guardian ad litem Program; Victim/Witness Program; Juvenile Court Reform; Family Court; Truancy Court; Adult Drug Court and DWI Treatment Courts. Since her retirement, she continues to be involved with the National Center for Drug Courts as a Trainer.
Martha Sue is married to Dan Samples, retired Lt Col with the US Air Force, and retired Captain with American Airlines. They are the parents of five adult children and have six grandchildren. They are members of First Presbyterian Church in Albemarle. Most weekends, they can be found listening/dancing to beach music; attending car events, or spending time with their family. Martha Sue enjoys water aerobics at the Stanly County Family YMCA; assisting with Second Grade learn to swim lessons at the YMCA; playing the piano for weekly Hymn Sing at Trinity Place and walking.
