Martha Hughes was first elected to the Albemarle City Council in 2013 as an At-Large Seat. She served for 9 years with her term ending in November of 2022. She has recently been appointed as the District 4 Council Member to complete the remaining year of Chris Whitley’s term.

She is married to Doug Hughes, has been a resident of the city for 39 years, mother of two sons and a member of First Lutheran Church. In addition to serving on Albemarle City Council she also serves on Stanly County Arts Council, Stanly County Visitors Board, Albemarle Rotary Club Board and a member of the Albemarle Tree Commission.

Martha is a UNC-Charlotte 49er fan having graduated from the university with a degree in Business Administration. She is a member of the Carolina Panthers’ Roaring Riot and in addition to football, she enjoys cooking, community service and spending time with family and friends.
