Dexter G. Townsend was appointed to fill the vacant council seat of the late T.E. White, representing District 1.
He was born in Bronx, New York and has spent almost all his life in Albemarle. After graduating from Albemarle Senior High School in 1986, he decided to enter into the work force. He maintained full-time employment while furthering his education at Stanly Community College. He earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Business Administration and studied Criminal Justice.
He began his career with Preformed Line Products in Albemarle 15 years ago and is currently a Production Supervisor.
Councilmember Townsend has been active in numerous organizations in Albemarle and Stanly County. He is a current member of the Stanly County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Men Making A Difference in Stanly County, Board of Directors for Stanly County Arts Council. He has served in the past on the Board of Directors for ADDC, Allocations Committee for Stanly County United Way, Board of Directors for Stanly Community Outreach, Stanly Lodge #88 of the Free & Accepted Masons, Prince Hall Affiliated, and as a charter member of the Elite Social Club.
He married his high school sweetheart, Tina Scott, in 1993. They are the proud parents of one daughter, Lyric. Dexter is a member of Union Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church where he served on the Board of Trustees under the leadership of the late T. E. White.
His aims while serving on city council are balanced growth, strategic land use plan, job creation, community development, and helping Albemarle become an All-American city. Dexter actively seeks input from citizens and welcomes any concerns and ideas.
