Albemarle is AMI ready. And so are you!

The City of Albemarle's Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project will upgrade all utility meters in the city at no cost to our customers.

All utility meters at homes and businesses across the city will be replaced with new, highly accurate smart meters starting in late June of 2025.

How does AMI WorkCustomer Benefits

  • No increased cost to customers. You will not need to pay for your new meter. The City of Albemarle has budgeted this upgrade as part of the City’s Strategic Plan. Having a new meter will not change your utility rate.
  • Already AMI ready. You don’t need to do anything to get ready for AMI. The City of Albemarle is taking care of the AMI project.
  • Up-to-date, on-demand electric and water usage details. AMI provides you with access to day-to-day energy and water consumption details.
  • Potential cost savings. With day-to-day usage information, you can adjust your usage and lower your utility bill.
  • Enhanced outage and maintenance response. AMI enables the City of Albemarle to more accurately track service interruptions. This improves response, repair, and service restoration time.
  • Effective service notifications and alerts. AMI will enable the City to provide a customer information portal in the future for you to sign up for alerts about outages, estimated service restoration, and other service issues.

Meter Installations

Technicians contracted by the City will arrive at homes and businesses in a vehicle labeled with the City of Albemarle’s logo. When they’re at a property, the technicians will knock at the door and let the property owner know they’re performing an installation.

Approximately 2,500 new electric meters will be installed each month. Installation of upgraded residential water meters will continue to occur as supplies and materials are received.

There is no reason for a technician to enter your home or business. The technicians will not ask for money in exchange for their service.

During your meter installation process, you will experience a utility service disruption lasting approximately 30 seconds.

We will install approximately 2,500 new electric meters each month. We will continue installing new residential water meters as we receive supplies.

AMI Project Part of City's Strategic Plan
