Albemarle is an hour's drive from the cities of Charlotte and Greensboro, and the resort community of Pinehurst. The proximity of these areas means that residents can choose to enjoy the lifestyle that only a smaller community can provide while being within a short drive from such amenities as the NFL's Carolina Panthers, the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats, Charlotte Motor Speedway, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, the Charlotte Symphony, Opera Carolina, the North Carolina Dance Theater, and the world famous golf courses of Pinehurst. Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Piedmont Triad Airport are a convenient drive of just over an hour from the City. In addition, Albemarle is less than three hours away from the beaches of North and South Carolina, and the mountains of North Carolina.
The City has an outstanding Parks and Recreation program and facilities that include five parks, a soccer complex and a community center. Among the facilities included in these parks are baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, disc golf course, playgrounds, walking trails, and two outdoor swimming pools. The City also has an active greenway system named in honor of former Mayor Roger F. Snyder that will eventually provide a network of multiuse trails that will connect key areas of the community in planned future phases of the system. Albemarle is also home to numerous events during the year such as outdoor concerts, festivals and running events.
Morrow Mountain State Park just east of Albemarle is a 4,742 acre state park on the shores of Lake Tillery. It offers numerous amenities including boating, fishing, camping, hiking and bridle trails, a museum and historic site and a swimming pool. The top of the park offers beautiful vistas of Lake Tillery and the surrounding countryside.
The quality of life in Albemarle and Stanly County is enhanced by a number of public and private organizations. Located in Albemarle, Carolinas HealthCare System Stanly is an excellent community hospital with a large medical staff including most medical specialties. Also located in Albemarle is the Stanly County Family YMCA; an outstanding facility with two indoor swimming pools, two gymnasiums, an aerobics center, Nautilus center, racquetball courts, and other amenities. Stanly Community College is located on the western edge of Albemarle in an expansive and attractive campus. It offers two-year degrees in a variety of disciplines as well as extensive training for business and industry. Pfeiffer University is an accredited four-year liberal arts university located approximately 10 minutes north of Albemarle in Misenheimer. Pfeiffer will begin providing two masters' degree programs in Downtown Albemarle beginning the fall of 2018. In 2017, they will begin construction of a 30,000 square foot school to house these new programs. It offers four-year degrees in a wide variety of disciplines as well as several masters' degree programs. Stanly County Public Schools have instituted a variety of innovative programs to achieve academic excellence and the system consistently scores among the top districts in the State of North Carolina in the state's testing program.
