Chief Oke joined the Albemarle Fire Department in 1989 as a member of the Albemarle Fire Department’s first recruit class. In 1992 Chief Oke was promoted to Firefighter III/Engineer a position he held until being promoted to Captain in 1999. Chief Oke was promoted to Battalion Chief in 2004 and to Fire Chief on November 29, 2009.
During his career with the Albemarle Department, Chief Oke has achieved a number of fire service certifications and has attended several special training programs throughout the United States, including numerous resident programs at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. In 1997 Chief Oke earned an Associate’s degree in Applied Science with a major in Fire Protection Technology from Central Piedmont Community College. In 2008 he earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology, Magna Cum Laude with a major in Fire Safety Engineering Technology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Chief Oke is a graduate of the NC Association of Fire Chief’s ‘Executive Development’ program and National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program.
Chief Oke is active with the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce as the chair of the Leadership Stanly Program. He is also an active member at First Lutheran Church in Albemarle.
In addition to his local activities Chief Oke serves at an At-Large Director for the Safety, Health and Survival Section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. Chief Oke's work with the Safety, Health and Survival Section puts him at the forefront of firefighter safety at the national level.
