Walk of Fame Policy
It is the intent of the City of Albemarle to recognize current or former residents of Albemarle who have achieved national, regional, or local recognition and have made substantial civic contributions to the Albemarle community, over a significant period, through their work in the community, lifetime achievements and volunteer service.
Honorees will be recognized on the City of Albemarle Walk of Fame. The walk will consist of bronze medallions bearing the name of each honoree and the year they were inducted. The general location for the Albemarle Walk of Fame will be in front of Albemarle City Hall, in the sidewalk.
Appointment to Walk of Fame Advisory Board
Walk of Fame Committee shall consist of committee members chosen by members of Albemarle City Council. Each city council member will nominate a committee member from their respective district, plus one at-large member. Each committee member must be approved by Albemarle City Council and must serve a three-year term. Terms are to be staggered amongst committee members.
Roles & Duties of Advisory Board
- Review qualifications for each nominee to determine eligibility of Walk of Fame Recognition
- Determine when an existing honoree may need to be removed from the Walk of Fame
- Coordinate Walk of Fame induction ceremony
- Work with the City Clerk to develop the budget and procure services and products needed for the Walk of Fame and induction ceremony
- Update Walk of Fame policy as needed and submit it to City Council for approval
Walk of Fame Application Process
- Walk of Fame nominee applications will be accepted throughout the calendar year, January 1 – April 30 for consideration during the next induction year.
- Induction will occur once per year in the Fall (pending Weather).
- Applications will be posted on the City of Albemarle’s website and social media platforms and will be available at the Customer Service-Utility Payments counter of Albemarle City Hall.
- After April 30 of every year, the City Clerk will provide copies of all applications received by the deadline to the Walk of Fame Advisory Board.
- Only complete applications will be provided to the committee for review. The City Clerk will determine when an application is complete.
- The Walk of Fame Advisory Board shall review the applications and by majority vote, determine which nominees to proceed with for a recommendation to City Council.
- No more than three candidates will be recommended for induction into the Walk of Fame during the induction year.
- Nominees will be informed of the committee’s recommendation prior to City Council’s consideration of the recommendation and asked to formally accept the nomination put forth on their behalf.
- Nominees will be informed of the date and time the City Council will consider the recommendation and will be updated on City Council’s decision.
- If a selection is made, formal induction into the Albemarle Walk of Fame will occur onsite with a ceremonial unveiling of the nominees’ bronze medallion.
Criteria for Nomination and Selection of Inductees into Walk of Fame
The nominee must be a former or current resident of the City of Albemarle. Nominee must have achieved national recognition in one of the following categories:
- Humanitarian
- Entertainment
- Civic
- Art/Architecture
- Sports
- Military
- Literary
- Business/Industry
Individuals eligible for nomination to the Albemarle Walk of Fame shall have performed outstanding service of enduring value to the residents of Albemarle and will not have committed any action to defame themselves or the Albemarle community. Those not selected are asked to re-submit their application the following nomination period.
